In the last Hotel that I had full responsibility for; I was completely confident that my Hotel Engineer was more responsible than any other single employee for the Hotel achieving its Financial Success each year (carry on reading or watch the video).

You often cannot see them, they are often almost invisible in what they do; but we must remember most of us would not be able to operate our Hotels without them. Old or New.

So, although you will not appreciate it, they will be the most Important employees in your Hotel.

Everything in the Hotel has to function so that everyone can carry out their jobs and so that the guests are safe and comfortable.

Eventually, Hotel buildings would start to crumble – the floors, walls and ceilings. Pest control would stop being effective. All of the furniture, fixtures, and equipment would need some assistance?

All of the electrical distribution, gas distribution and air conditioning would  become unsafe. Water distribution and sewage would stop to function; the hotel would smell and become unsafe. Fire alarm systems and Guest safety would be at risk.

Vertical transportation systems (elevators) would stop and the property surrounding the Hotel like parking and landscaping would become scruffy.

Kitchen and laundry equipment. Lighting and sound systems and so on and so on. A building is a building – whether it is a Hotel or not; the engineering department still needs to be managed.

If the electronically controlled locks break? If the alarm systems malfunction? Engineers cannot operate fixed hours. Twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week is when they must be there.

The Hotel Maintenance or Engineering department has the responsibility for everything in the Hotel. When the guests are sound asleep the systems operate.

You often cannot see them. And they often slide into the area that needs help, fix and then slide out again without as much as a Thank you.

Everything has to work so that everyone can do their jobs and the guests are safe and comfortable.

In the last Hotel that I had full responsibility for; I was confident that my Hotel Engineer was more responsible than any other single employee for the Hotel achieving its Budget each year.

Hotel Engineers and Maintenance are my Heroes.
